Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) is deeply rooted in the cultures that practice it. It is a sensitive and personal issue, often wrapped up in traditions and family expectations. For you the survivor, some of what you will learn on this website may contradict things you’ve long been told about cutting.

FGM/C can have negative effects on your long-term health, including complications during pregnancy. Sadly, a tremendous amount of misinformation exists about female genital mutilation/cutting. We created this virtual “toolkit” with factual information on cutting – backed up by the latest scientific research –to help you make decisions about your health.

Discovering new information about FGM/C can make you feel upset and stressed – this is completely normal. Our goal is to give you the confidence to feel comfortable talking to your health care provider about cutting (doctor, nurse, midwife, or therapist).
